Mr. Lin, Yi-tsai, the soap master and original founder of “Mei Shang Tang” , was just an apprentice who sold soapstone at the back of the Taipei train station when he was young. He handled soaps that contained excessive soap alkali every day and as a result suffered from hand dermatitis, a disease that is difficult to cure. Because of this he made up his mind to study and research how to make the soaps neutral, so they don’t harm the skin.

In 1957, he applied the soap-making techniques and skills he’d learned for more than 10 years to start up the “Mei Shang Tang” soap factory with his brother, Mr. Lin, Den-hsien. In 1981, they expanded the factory in the Sanxia District, New Taipei City. They’ve produced soaps for more than 60 years and witnessed the prosperity and hardships of the traditional soap business in Taiwan over those 60 years.

At that time “Mei Shang Tang’s” the most popular products were the famous “FLOAT” floating medical soap. The unique techniques used to manufacture the floating soap could only be performed by two companies globally; one being Mei Shang Tang and the other the US company, IVORY.
